Haley transferred to UC Berkeley in 2021. Haley had aspirations of being a lawyer, and admission to Berkeley brought her one step closer to this dream. Unlike her peers, Haley felt scared and alone. Other students had their families to fall back on for financial support and career advice.
Not knowing how to take the first step, Haley thought her dreams of pursuing law school would never become reality. However, after joining RTS in 2022, this could not be further from the truth. Haley was paired with an RTS career advisor who helped her design a career action plan. This document helped her map out each step she would need to take to become a lawyer. She attended monthly career workshops, networked with legal professionals and received specialized law school application support.
Last summer, Haley secured a judicial internship with the San Francisco Superior Court and has since been accepted into Berkeley Law and UCLA Law! Thank you for giving Scholars like Haley the resources they need to pursue their dream careers.
That is not all Haley has done. With her internship experience in tow, Haley has helped launch a new internship program, Fostering Legal Connections, with other foster students at Berkeley. After talking with the judge from her previous internship, Haley wrote a proposal to Berkeley Guardian Scholars to create a paid judicial internship program specifically for former foster youth. This gives a consistent and visible path for former foster youth to gain crucial legal experience!
